July 4
11:00 am CT -- My mom and I hop on a plane from Oklahoma City to Denver.
We're flying Frontier (one of the friendliest, most fabulous airlines around) so our plane has a mascot: Sheldon the Green Sea Turtle.
Funnest moment of the flight? When one of the attendants said, "Ladies and gentlemen, the captain will be dimming the cabin lights for the duration of the flight to improve Bob's good looks. If that doesn't work, we'll be selling alcohol in about twenty minutes."
12:30 pm MT -- We land in Denver. We have a three hour layover (yes, three hours) so we decide to take a tour of the terminals. Our travels included The Body Shop, Ben & Jerry's (alas, no White Russian), and Pour la France (a yummy French restaurant).
3:30 pm MT -- We take off for Vegas. This time our plane mascot is Montana the Elk. He wasn't quite as friendly as Sheldon (neither was the flight staff).
But he did point out Lake Mead as we flew over.
5:30 pm PT -- Land in Vegas. My dad picks us up at the airport and whisks us off to the Rio. My mom and I bought red, white, and blue t-shirts and my dad's former student, Alec, took our picture on the rooftop.
7:45 pm PT -- We had a decent dinner at Voodoo Steak. The food and service are okay at best, but the views are amazing! And the desserts were definitely artistic.
9:00 pm PT -- Then we headed back out onto the patio (with a very small--by Vegas standards--crowd) to watch the fireworks from Caesar's Palace across the way. It was amazing being at the same level as the fireworks, and if I had to choose a place to watch 4th of July fireworks every year this would be it.
Here's a fun video to give you an idea of what it was like:
Hugs and hope you had a Happy 4th!
