Happy Leap Day

Hooray, it's leap year! The much maligned month of February gets an extra day, authors with March 1st deadlines breathe a little easier, and people with February 29th birthdays finally get to have a real birthday party.

Leap year means more than just an extra day to me. It always makes me think of Pirates of Penzance, one of my favorite movies of all time. An indentured pirate (Rex Smith) believes he is going to be released from service by the pirate king (Kevin Kline) in his 21st year so he can marry to beautiful maiden (Linda Ronstadt), but because of a screw up by his nursemaid (Angela Landsbury) his contract actually says he'll be released on his 21st birthday. Having been born on Leap Day, of course, this is a problem.

Leap year also means another Summer Olympics. (It used to means another Winter Olympics, too, but the IOC messed that up a few years ago.) This summer's Olympics take place in London and I can't wait to watch. I love the Olympics. The spirit of the games makes me excited to watch sports I wouldn't normally give the time of day. Like weightlifting. Okay, not weightlifting, but pretty much everything else. My favorites are swimming, gymnastics, and tennis.

Leap year also means it's time for another Presidential Election. I'm not going to get political on the blog, but let me just say that sometimes it's really hard to keep my political opinions to myself. I've been watching the primaries with shock and disgust (oops, opinion slipping) and I can't wait to see where the election takes us.

Also, I have to say a very special happy Leap Year birthday to the late Ladislav Vychodil, my dad's mentor and friend. They're laughing and learning and lighting the world together again.

Hugs,
TLC
