COOP2 13: Bobsleigh

Bobsleigh has to be my favorite of the sledding-type sports. Mainly because it seems like the safest one (have you noticed a theme of danger in the winter sports?) but also because it's funny to watch the athletes scurry to climb into the bobsleigh after pushing off. Especially the four-person teams.

To be honest, another reason I love the Bobsleigh is because of the movie Cool Runnings and the story of the first Jamaican bobsled team. (Jamaica, btw, being an extremely tropical and non-snow-covered island.) It's a really fun, uplifting movie. Plus, Doug E. Doug always makes me laugh.

Today's bonus prize is such an advance copy that the book doesn't even have a released cover yet! Win an ARC of THE FALSE PRINCESS by Eilis O'Neal. Here is the blurb:

Princess and heir to the throne of Thorvaldor, Nalia has led a privileged life at court. But everything changes when she learns, just after her sixteenth birthday, that she is a false princess, a stand-in for the real Nalia, who has been hidden away for her protection. Cast out with little more than the clothes on her back, the girl now called Sinda must leave behind the city, her best friend, Kiernan, and the only life she’s ever known.

Sent to live with her only surviving relative, a cold, scornful woman with little patience for her newfound niece, Sinda proves inept at even the simplest tasks. Then she discovers that magic runs through her veins – long-suppressed, dangerous magic that she must learn to control – and she realizes that she will never learn to be just a simple village girl.

Sinda returns to the city to seek answers. Instead, she rediscovers the boy who refused to forsake her, and uncovers a secret that could change the course of Thorvaldor’s history, forever.

I had the great luck to meet Eilis (pronounced Ay-Lish, btw) at an Oklahoma authors get together and have been pining for her debut novel ever since. Alas, I will have to wait until July, but you could win one now!

To enter today's contest, tell me what makes you laugh and cheers you up when you're down? When you're having a rotten day--or a string of endlessly gray ones, like we've been having here in Oklahoma--what can you do to lift your mood? I'd have to say my dog, Daisy, always cheers me up. Especially when she's chasing her own tail. And, failing that, reruns of Psych always do the trick. Answer in comments for your chance to win Oh. My. Gods. and Goddess Boot Camp and THE FALSE PRINCESS by Eilis O'Neal.

Answer this question: What cheers you up?

PRIZES

I love Cool Runnings! Great movie.

I am cheered up by music. Not all music, just my favorite songs. I'll throw on some Death Cab for Cutie or Dear and the Headlights. (I'm wearing a DCFC shirt!)
Reading also makes me happy, so I'll get a book and read for hours when I'm down.

There's a few things that cheers me up:

+My friends, they're the best at cheering me up. They're genuinely two of my favourite people in the world - they don't even have to do anything to cheer me up, we'll just be talking and they'll have me laughing/smiling within minutes.

+Music, cheesy 80's/90's pop music or a select few 60's songs will cheer me up.

+Texts From Last Night, as in, the website... that's a new found cheer-up technique, I was having a bad day last week and spent hours just going through the texts and it had me laughing and feeling hyper for the rest of the day.

+Movies, some movies can make me feel better, like Dirty Dancing or some of my favourite comedies.

For me it's animals. Dogs playing in the snow or swimming, horses romping in the fields, cats playing with yarn--they all cheer me up.

I went around all day yesterday singing the song from Cool Runnings. Love that movie!!

Watching funny TV shows always cheers me up. Right now I love How I Met Your Mother and The Big Bang Theory.

Play with my kitten makes me laugh.
Going on a date to the movies with my husband or having a girls day out with my best friend cheers me up.

What cheers you up?

- Cotton, my dog. He is always happy to see me, and never gets angry with me.
- My boyfriend. He is my best friend and always understand me when I'm upset. Besides, he tries to cheer me up.
- Chocolate! Tons of it!

My kitties, snuggling up with me. Or a rerun of a favorite show, like Friends or How I Met Your Mother.

I have to say my friends make me feel better after i've had a bad, bad , BAD day. Reading also helps, a lot.

Oh, how amazing does The False Princess sound?! I so can't wait to read this!

Chocolate always does the job for me. As well as girlie nights in with my Mum; junk food, romcoms, and hanging out with my Mum, it's great! Or, really, I could just chat to my Dad. He's such a big kid, and never fails to make me laugh. So pretty much time with family and chocolate will work for me :)

Three things will almost instantly cheer me up:
Watching Puppy Bowl reruns on Animal Planet.
Playing Wii (especially Super Mario1)
Watching a horrible movie (and tearing it apart!) with my hubby

Playing video games usually cheers me up. And if its raining it usually lifts my mood.

Watching my dog always gives me a laugh. He loves to stretch out on his back on the floor and play with toys like a baby would if they were dangled above them. Plus when he doesn't know exactly what you are saying, he manages to tilt his head and crinkle his forehead in just such a way that you know he's asking, "Huh?"

BTW - Love Psych!! Shawn and Gus crack me up!! I don't know if you've seen the movie, "Gamer," but Shawn and Juliette make cameos together as a E!News kind of reporter segment. I cracked up when I saw them...

Katy said...

My pets obviously can make even the worst day better. Other than that rewatching Arrested Develpoment never fails to lighten a bad day. Psych is great by the way. I only recently started watching and I'm totally hooked.

Helping people cheers me up like nothing else. Yep.

The things that cheer me up: spending time with my friends and family, reading a good book, running with music blasting from my ipod, listening to music, watching a funny movie, basically anything that keeps me from thinking about whatever is bothering me(:

Books, music and taking a shower always seem to cheer me up. Music just makes me happy. Books transport me to a different world, and showers relax me. So these three things cheer me up when I'm sad.

Oh my gosh, I loved the movie Cool Runnings when I was a kid (and now I really want to watch it)!

My best friends make me laugh. They always manage to make even the most boring days/topics seem hilarious.

When I'm sad, a box of Girl Scout cookies and a nice, long book usually does the trick. If not, its my friend's voice that calms me down. :O)

Either my friends, or if I'm really sad or something, listening to music in my closet (not to sound emo lol) can usually do the trick.

Hannah said...

For me, its a lame joke told by a friend that you laugh at because its sooo stupid its actually funny or a GREAT book!

PS: Tera, my BFF, Erica's, cousin is in the Olympics for bobsled this year!!! How cool is that?! I can't remember his name, but he is from right here in Buffalo, New York!!!

OH MY GOSH I REALLY WANT TO WIN THIS ONE MORE THAN ALL THE OTHERS!!! SO HOPEFUL!!!

Um...probably watching Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Will Smith is hilarious!

My dog. He seems to know when I'm sad and comes over and nuzzles my hand with his nose. I can't help but smile after that.

Super simple answer - my kids, all three of them but in completely different ways.

Music. Definitely. I know I can turn it on at anytime and it will put me in a better mood!

What really cheers me up is dancing to a good upbeat song. Anytime I'm down I'll turn on my music and get my groove on!

What makes me laugh? Has to be my brother! He's a complete clown XD

What can cheer me up?

Two completely opposite things that manage the job all the same:

1) Being alone, just on my bed, writing;

2) Being together with friends, out and about, laughing and chatting the hours away [ if I say day my mom might kill me :) ]

Some things that make me happy:
-My boyfriend who always makes me laugh when I'm upset
-Watching Pride and Prejudice
-A long hot bath
-Snuggling in my bed while watching Disney movies and holding my favorite teddy bear

Animals! When I feel like crap, I head over to our local zoo and sit and watch the creatures (I have a season pass, yay)... my husband has remarked that it's incredible how much happier and cheerful I am for the rest of the day after visiting the animals. Crazy! But I love them, haha.

Bianca said...

What cheers me up are poems by James KrĂĽss, sentimental songs or Evanescence (though i cannot listen to them when I'm in a good mood), Drama club (the craziest people of my school go there) and if nothing else does the trick: working. There is nothing more uplifting than being positively exhausted from hard work that had to be done/ helped someone. I might not be cheered up immediately, but i will as soon as i wake up in the morning afterwards.

Watching Chuck really cheers me up! Love that show! Also, give me some donuts and chocolate and I'll definitely feel better. :)

Julie said...

When I'm having a bad day, usually reading or music can cheer me up. Venting to my friends and letting them make me laugh. And if my brother's having a good day, his silliness is a total mood lifter.

Michelle said...

I can always count on the hubby to cheer me up. He's good at helping look at something awful and turning it into something funny. Or chocolate. That seems to work pretty well too.

Kristen said...

Hot cocoa or a chai tea latte most days. :) Or snuggling up with a good book will cheer me up anyday!

Music can usually cheer me up pretty well. It's soothing, and takes my mind off of whatever's bringing me down. :)

A walk by the sea! As simple as that. No matter the season, it´s always a fascinating view!

Whenever I'm sad, I always remember that God loves me and He will never leave me or forsake me.
Whenever I need to smile, I just watch a music video by the Flight of the Concords of their song, "I'm Not Crying." Works every time. =)

Sitting in my wonderful red chair with a good book and a cup of hot chocolate. That always does the trick for me.

Steph said...

Music, movies (sometimes), and reading. They let me get away from whatever upset me. It lets me live and see someone else's troubles, and that life could definitely be worse.

Things that cheer me up: my cat, best friend, watching a romantic comedy, watching funny tv shows, and reading....although it can't be a sad book because that would make me feel worse.

Really loud music, talking to someone, watching my favourite TV show or my favourite book. Also watch Brignet Jones' Diary (makes me laugh every time I see it).

My grandfather was a bobsledder (four men bobsleigh), though he never made it to the Olympics.

Singing definately cheers me up. Which is usually why you can find my trilling away when I can get away with it (hard to do at a libary where I work, though). Even better is when I can go beachcoming for glass while singing. There is something so soothing about being all alone on a beach singing to yourself. But, maybe that's just me!
