COOP2 5: Speed Skating

Speed Skating has one of the grandest legacies of any winter sport. It originates, at least in popularity, in the Netherlands, where people are apparently as crazy for speed skaters as Americans are for basketball players and the rest of the world is about soccer players. Sometimes it looks like NASCAR on ice.

When I think about Speed Skating it always makes me think of the book Hans Brinker, or the Silver Skates. (You can read the book for free online at Project Gutenburg.) The late 19th century story is about a boy and his sister who want to compete in the big skating race on the canal because they want the prize, a pair silver skates. I remember reading this book as a child and thinking how wonderful it would be to skate outside on a frozen canal. It would feel like you were flying over ice.

Today's bonus prize comes from the I Heart Daily co-founder who recently interviewed swoon-worthy speed skater J.R. Celski: LOVESTRUCK SUMMER by Melissa Walker. Here is the blurb:

This is the story of Quinn, an indie rock girl who came out to Austin, Texas for a music internship.

She also plans to spend long, lazy days in the sun at outdoor concerts--and to meet a hot musician or two. Instead, she's stuck rooming with her sorority brainwashed cousin, who now willingly goes by the name 'Party Penny.' Their personalities clash, big time.

But Sebastian, a gorgeous DJ, definitely makes up for it. Sebastian has it all: looks, charm, and great taste in music. So why can't Quinn keep her mind off Penny's friend cute, All-American Russ and his Texas twang?

One thing's certain: Quinn's in for a summer she'll never forget!

What a fun way to warm up from this winter chill!

And to enter today's contest, tell me about a favorite book from childhood. (My big three are The Westing Game, The Egypt Game, and From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.) Answer in comments for your chance to win Oh. My. Gods. and Goddess Boot Camp and LOVESTRUCK SUMMER.

SPEED SKATING CONTEST
Answer this question: What was your favorite book as a child?

PRIZES
(1) copy of Oh. My. Gods.

(1) copy of LOVESTRUCK SUMMER by Melissa Walker

I think my favorite book as a child is Harry Potter 1. I have always like to read, but this was the book that make me a fan of reading. It opens me to world of fantasy and magic, and since then I can stop reading.

I had a huge fairy tale book which is in our 'main library' right now. It had all the old fairy tales, in its unedited gory glory. I loved reading it because of all the morals in the story. Nowadays' fairy tales? Blehs. Happy endings with no morals or hard work. Psssh.

Anne of Green Gables, without a doubt!

My favourite book as a child 8i still love to read it today) was "Ronja, The Robber's Daughter" by Astrid Lindgren. It has it all: a very brave and adorable heroine, an equally cool hero, a magical world with unbelievable creatures, a great story-line with many unexpected twists and turns and a lot of tension, believable emotions, a happy end, heros that acted like real people...

Now as a teenager, i also love the message(s) in the book: you can do anything you want to, if you just put your heart and soul into it; don't be misled by the first impression; and above all: Be Yourself!

An aweinspiring example of how children's literature should be.

Ohh this is an easy one: my fav book of childhood has to be the Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth Speare. I WILL go to the Barbados one day because of this book - I'm just sayin'.

E.B. White's Charlotte's Web will always hold a special place in my heart. It is probably the first book that ever made me cry, and it still brings me to tears each time I read it. Love that book! Two of my other childhood favorites were L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables and Louisa Mae Alcott's Little Women.

Violet said...

Eek! SpellingFAIL. That was meant to say "Louisa MAY Alcott."

My favorite book was Castle in the Attic by Elizabeth Winthrop. I always thought it would be cool to be able to shrink and play in my Barbie houses, which is what happens to the boy in the book. Except for he is playing in a castle, not Barbie's dream house.

Your mention of The Egypt Game reminds me of one of my favourites, The Witches of Worm, also by Zilpha Keatley Snyder. I first read it when I was six and it scared me half to death...but it stuck with me and ever since I've reread it at least once a year.

When I rescued a kitten I'd found in the woods last summer, my sister tried to convince me I should name her Worm, after the kitten in the book. Not happening!

My favorite book as a child was the Amelia Bedelia books, about a fun housekeeper.

The Little House on the Prairie Series. Read them over and over and over.

The Amelia Bedelia series by Peggy Parish were my favorite books when I was little. My mom and I used to crack up about the halarious things Amelia would do! Till this day my favorite thing was when she "pitches" a tent.Instead of setting the tent up Amelia throws the tent into the woods! I have a little sister now and she won't sit still long enough for me to read them to her but i'm very excited for her to get a little older so that I can read them to her.

What Do You Say Dear? is one that comes to mind. My mom would read it to me and I would answer back with the polite answers.
She'd also read The Runaway Bunny to me. It's one of her favorites. I love it too!
I read The Boxcar Children books. I would read them over and over and they were my obsession.
Somebody Loves You Mr. Hatch - SO sweet!

My favorite book was The Little Princess. It's about a little rich girl who goes to a boarding school and is treated like a pricess. When she suddenly becomes poor, she loses her friends and is treated like a slave instead of royalty. But she meets a little girl and they tell stories of being beautiful pricesses to make themselves feel better. Then, one day a man comes and takes the little girls in and they are happy little princesses again. This is such a heartwarming story and i recommend it to all of you. it's so sweet and it can make you remember when you too wanted to be a princess.

I loved the Laura Ingles Wilder books. The best known one, Little House on the Prairie, was my favorite. I read those books too many times to count. I really loved them. I still have them. They sit on my new bookcase along with many of my other past favorite books.

I loved Are You There God? It's Me, Margraet by Judy Blume. It was a grea eye-opener and coming of age story. It was also what lead me into the world of realistic fiction. I was a die-heart fantasy and historic fiction reader.

As a child, my favourite book was Johanna Spyri's Heidi. I was so attached to it, I'd carry it everywhere with me. Not only did it get me into reading, it also got me writing.

It's got to be between the first Harry Potter book by JK Rowling (of course), and The Littlest Mermaid by Wendy Cheyette Lewison & illustrated by Jerry Smath(I was a huge mermaid fan, and this one came with jeweled stickers! I probably read it a billion times when I was really little). The latter isn't much of a reading book, but it was fun to look at the artwork! :)

I loved reading as a childhood and so I had a lot of 'favourites' but the one that stands out in my memory is Eric Carle's The Hungry Catepillar.

I loved the counting, (gently) sticking my fingers through the holes in the pages and then the beautiful surprise at the end.

This is a tough one, because I wasn't much into books as a child. I think I would have to say The Fantastic Mr Fox or The Magic Finger, both by Roald Dahl. I remember reading them as I listened to the audio tapes on a casette player at school, and really liking them. They were pretty good!

Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine!

This is a tough one because I didn't have a favorite book, but more like a favorite series - Girl Talk. I wanted to be just like Randy (she's a girl, btw) and couldn't wait to be in Junior High (I think I was in the 3rd or 4th grade when these books came out.) I still have all my copies too.

I had so many favorite books as a child, but one that stands out the most is Matilda by Roald Dahl. It was the first novel that introduced me to the possibilities of humor and eccentricity in books. I was absolutely besotted with the idea that a little girl like me could posses such intellect and the power to move objects with her mind. The fact that Matilda was an ardent reader only heightened my love for her. If she had the ability to defy her circumstances, I too could reach my goals.

'Shadow Castle' by Marion Cockrell. When I was very young I found a battered copy at my grandma's house with my mother's name on the inside cover... I read it right there, LOVED it, and then asked my mom about it... and learned that it was her favorite book as a child. I was delighted and read it over and over... I still have that copy, and even though I don't think Cockrell ever wrote another book, it remains one of my favorites for both the story itself and the sentimental value.

My favorite book as a child was probably "Are You my Mother?" It is really short, but very cute. I also loved this book called Charlie the Caterpillar (I think that was the title), and of course the classic Dr. Seuss books that were pretty amazing. I loved One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.

My favorite book as a child was The little mouse, the red ripe strawberry, and the hungry bear. My read it to all my sisters and I ask we grew up, I read it to my preschoolers, Ive done felt boards iwth it, and my sister reads it to her two boys and they each have their individual copy. I can tell you the book without the book infront of me. Not only do I love the book but it brings back great memories of spending time with my mom and my sisters.

I absolutely loved Frances Hodgson Burnett's A Little Princess. Except I had a paperback copy (which has since fallen apart due to old glue and variable weather conditions) so I loved to check out the hardcover copy from the library just so I could feel its smooth pages when I was reading it. It's no wonder I had such an imagination growing up with the likes of Sara and Anne (yes, huge L.M. Montgomery fan, too) for companions.
