COOP2 9: Figure Skating

Finally we come to what is arguably the most popular sport at the winter Olympics. Figure Skating! (And so appropriate, too, considering American Evan Lysacek brought home the gold just two days ago.) I think Figure Skating is such an appealing sport because of the seamless blend of elegance of power. The girl in the photo below probably launched into a triple something just seconds after her elegant arabesque.

What girl didn't (or doesn't) dream of being an Olympic figure skater? It's like the pinnacle of girly fantasy. Beautiful dance moves, sparkling costumes, and the eyes of the entire world focused on you for that moment in time. Wow.

Wanna know what else girls dream about becoming? Cinderella. And that's funny because today's bonus prize allows readers to do just that. An ARC of THE CINDERELLA SOCIETY by Kay Cassidy. Here is the blurb:

When the Prom Queen becomes your fairy godmother…

Sixteen year old outsider, Jess Parker, gets the chance of a lifetime: an invitation to join a secret girl power society dedicated to defeating the mean girls of the world. The Cinderella Society guides all new recruits through its top secret ultimate life makeover. It’s all part of preparing them to face down the Wickeds and win. Determined not to let the Cindys down, Jess dives in with a passion. Finally, a chance to belong and show the world what she’s made of.

… be careful what you wish for.

Jess’s transformation wins her the heart of her dream crush and a shot at uber-popularity. Until the Wickeds–led by Jess’s arch enemy–begin targeting innocent girls in their war against the Cindys, and Jess discovers the real force behind her exclusive society. It’s a high stakes battle of good vs. evil, and the Cindys in power need Jess on special assignment. When the mission threatens to destroy her dream life come true, Jess is forced to choose between living a fairy tale and honoring the Sisterhood… and herself.

What’s a girl to do when the glass slipper fits, but she doesn’t want to wear it anymore?

I had the chance to read this one early on, and let me tell you it is awesome!

To enter today's contest, tell me about another childhood fantasy--besides being Cinderella or a figure skater. Those were my two big ones, of course, but I also wanted to be a veterinarian for a long time. Oh, and Rainbow Brite. Answer in comments for your chance to win Oh. My. Gods. and Goddess Boot Camp and THE CINDERELLA SOCIETY by Kay Cassidy.

When I was a kid, I wanted to sprout fairy wings and wave a magic wand. The closest I've come to that reality is reading books about fairies :P

Oh, and I wanted to live in a chocolate house. Enough said.

I wanted to be left handed. I know, big dreams huh? Alas, it wasn't meant to be. I am right handed.

Though wanting to be exactly like my dad resulted in me being able to wield a knife and fork like a lefty. That's about it. I should have set my sights higher...like cartwheeler. Another skill beyond me :P

I dreamt of becoming a teacher. And I'm actually working towards that goal right now!

I never really thought that far. I mean, occupation wise was like blah. I wasn't the kid with dreams really xD

I wanted to be a jockey or a writer. I am much too tall for the first one, so guess I'd better keep working on my writing :-)

I always wanted to be a lawyer.. and then I found out you had to go to college for 7 years!!! I was in young and I thought that was forever, but now I have my Associates degree and I'm going for my Bachelor's in Criminal Justice this fall, and being a lawyer is something I have begun to think about again!

Well, I was a figure skater (both roller and ice) all the way through college, so that childhood dream was achieved, but I never got to do pairs skating. I was always too tall to be paired up.

When I was a kid ,I wanted to be a librarian for sometime because I got to sit amidst lots of books and then shifted to adminstrative services (cos I thought I could order people around :) ) and finally by third grade I wanted to be a doctor which I became eventually. Took a long time but did.

With The Lion King being my favourite childhood movie ever, I always dreamed of visiting Africa and raising a lion cub (that was of course going to be king/queen). Haven't been able to do so yet, but there's still enough time.

I wanted to be Jem from the cartoon show Jem and the Holograms. She was the original "Hannah Montana!!" I even went as her for Halloween one year with pink hair and everything! Loved the idea of being a secret rock star.

I tended to change my mind a lot, I have all these weird conflicting passions - on one hand, I loved art but then there was this whole other side of me that loved science type stuff. Things I wanted to be include:

-Fashion designer (which would've happened if my mum hadn't talked me out of it)
-Interior designer
-Vet
-Pediatrician
-After seeing the movie Coyote Ugly, me and my friend totally wanted to own a bar... we even designed it (well, I *did* love interior design too)
-Social worker
-Gymnast (when I was younger, I did gymnastics, I was pretty good - I competed and stuff but I quite when I was 12 so that was a short lived thing)
-Archaeologist
-Geologist (not sure if that's the right name, but you know those people who study things like earthquakes and volcanos and stuff? That)
-Forensic scientist
-Pirate. Seriously.
-A secret agent! But really, who doesn't secretely want to be a bad ass spy type person with mad ninja skills? =P

Bianca said...

Well, actually I did dream of being a famous figure skater! But besides that a famous gymnast!!! I love gymnastics, although I never officially did them.

When I was little I wanted to be in the Olympics, but not as a figure skater or any of that. I wanted to do trampoline routines, which actually didn't get added to the Olympics till after I had grown up. It was kind of cool to seeing a trampoline event added to the Summer Olympics. I didn't even know as a kid that it was an actual sport, we just had a lot of fun making up routines like the gymnasts on the floor, but we were doing it on the trampoline in the neighbors backyard instead.

When I was little I wanted to be the Queen of England, which I related to the time as being the queen of everything. Of course, back then, it seemed more feasible since Prince William didn't have a girlfriend and I didn't realize how much plane tickets to the U.K. cost....ah youth. I'm still holding out though for a prince who treats me like a queen, but in the figurative sense of course.

i wanted to be a power ranger..and, no, I wasn't a tomboy. I was just obsessed with power rangers for the majority of my childhood for some odd reason. hahaha! I did, however, want to be the pink power ranger. Does that redeem me?

When I was a little girl I wanted to be an astronaut. My walls were plastered with NASA photographs & space posters. I loved the movie Space Camp & still vividly remember where I was when I first saw footage of the Challenger disaster. I never made it into space, but I still follow NASA pretty religiously. :)

I wanted to be a triple threat: Actress, author, director. That way I could write the book/screenplay, star in the movie, and direct it. I was, obviously, a bit overambitious. Now I'm just focusing on one of the three (since I suck at acting).

More than one of these dreams are still there in the back of my mind…

I wanted to be a lot of things...a mermaid, but I thought it would get to lonely at the pool at night :( a priest...but I found out they only took boys. I wanted to be a comedian and a cartoonist. And I wanted to write stories...so I'm still working on that part, but I'm definately someone special :)

I fell in love with The Little Mermaid as a kid, and I always wanted to be a mermaid. Why? Ariel was pretty, had red hair (like me), could sing, and had cool friends! Who wouldn't want to be a mermaid? Plus, I've always liked fish, so I could get to look at them all day.

For something that there was more chance of happening, though not by much, I wanted to be a fabulous famous rich person; a singer and an actress. I basically wanted to be Kylie Minogue who was my idol when I was 4. There is video footage of me with my kids' casette player and microphone, singing along to Kylie's song Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi. How cool are the dreams you have when you're younger?

I wrote a wonderful comment, but I think it got lost between my pressing "post comment" and it actually getting posted. :(

The summary of my long discussion of my imaginary childhood life, is that I wanted to save the world. Every book I read and movie I watched somehow influenced the fantasy I had created. In this land, I was an all-powerful, popular, beautiful, athletic wonder, but I was also an orphan bounced around from place to place trying to find where I belong (think that song from Hercules). Eventually, I found out that my mother was Hera, who came down in human form to our dimension and married Sirius Black. I had a twin sister who looked like our mother, and I looked like our father. I had a gazillion famous people/characters as relatives or close family friends, however!

I went through a bunch of "When I grow I want to be..." when I was a little girl, but the ones that stood out most were: teacher, author, chef, drummer, photographer. I don't think my cooking skills are much of an advantage for me these days and my drumming skills are non-existent, but the remaining three are still on the go! I want to teach primary school, I'd love to write a YA novel and I want to take up photography as a hobby :)

Umm... *looks around nervously*... I wanted to become a writer... or a dancer, but I was too clumsy as a child. Neither of them became a reality for me until a few years ago when I realized that if I wasn't going to chase my dreams, no one was going to do it for me, and I'd end up unsatisfied at the end of my life. Now I'm both, and the little girl in me cheers with joy!
