COOP 1: Opening Ceremonies

Woohoo! The Olympics kicks off tonight with the Opening Ceremonies, kind of like a giant homecoming party on an international scale. Athletes from all around the world will gather in the National Stadium for the parade of nations and the lighting of the Olympic torch. Over 160,000 people (athletes, actors, VIPs, officials, volunteers, and more) are expected to attend.

This is the day when all the nations of the world come together in peace for the love of sport and the spirit of competition. It doesn't get more international that this. So, to enter today's contest, I want you to answer this question: If you could live in any other country in the world, which one would you choose and why?

I can't answer this question easily, because I am such a huge fan of the world. On any given day I might want to live in Australia, Argentina, France, or Japan. But if I had to choose one country right now, it would be South Africa. I am enthralled with the atmosphere of Cape Town, with it's outdoorsy/active/surfer vibe, breathtaking landscapes, and rich and diverse cultural history.

Like I said before, every day of the COOP you'll have a chance to win at least one more book in addition to OH. MY. GODS. So what's today's bonus prize?

Since the Opening Ceremonies is such a great big rock star party, what better book to pair with the sports party to end all sports parties than Stephanie Kuehnert's debut novel, I WANNA BE YOUR JOEY RAMONE? Here's the blurb:

A raw, edgy, emotional novel about growing up punk and living to tell.

The Clash. Social Distortion. Dead Kennedys. Patti Smith. The Ramones. Punk rock is in Emily Black's blood. Her mother, Louisa, hit the road to follow the incendiary music scene when Emily was four months old and never came back.

Now Emily's all grown up with a punk band of her own, determined to find the tune that will bring her mother home. Because if Louisa really is following the music, shouldn't it lead her right back to Emily?

Does't that sound awesome? If you want a chance to win OH. MY. GODS. and I WANNA BE YOUR JOEY RAMONE just enter the contest in comments below.

I would choose the United Kingdom. Why? Well first of all, all the hot chicks with gorgeous accents. haha. Secondly, because I want to get an English accent. And also because Harry Potter is from there and ever since I read the books I have wanted to go and go there. Maybe even see the castle they filmed it in, That would be way cool! Plus I would go to a train station and ask where platform 9 and 3 quarters is. And also because I think it would be sweet if I got to see Big Ben, which would probably make me want to climb up on the hands of the clock and start singing "We Can Fly" from Disney's Peter Pan. Then I would be titled 'American Weirdo', so I guess that would ruin the hope of the English girls.

I'd love to live in Spain! I've never been but love the thought of sangria and bull fighting and flamenco dancing, or maybe I've just read too much Hemingway ;-)

I would live in India. I've been in love with the country intensely for years, and have had some sort of relationship with it since I was a kid. Not to mention I'm learning Hindi and it's my favorite language in the world, and the people and culture just make me very happy. :)

Scotland. Highlands. In an old, creepy castle on a bazillion acres.

Why? Why? Have you HEARD that accent?

::sigh::

Somewhere in Europe. Maybe, Holland. Last year, I watched an episode of 60 minutes that reported that people who live in Holland are the happiest people in the world. Wait, I think it was Holland.

I would probably choose to live in Ireland. It is such a gorgeous country. I'm 40+% Irish and would love to spend time there. I spent Spring Break there one year on a bus trip, but I would love to wander about the country aimlessly and meet my (very) distant relatives that live there.

My, that is hard. I say Japan. Maybe it is because I'm such a big fan of their entertainment area, I would love to see what it is like to live there.

I would live in Sicily. I visited it last summer and fell in love. Its a mountainous island. I remeber riding on a bus up a mountain and spotting a palm tree! Its the most beautiful place I've ever been.

i would love to move to belgium. i was over there for the summer and it was just absolutely beautiful. plus, oddly enough, i felt safer there than i do in my own homwtown.

I'd like to live in the UK! Beautiful country. It's a pretty historical country with all its intereting histories! I'd like to visit the castles, old buildings, churches, and of course the bookstores!

If I could live anywhere in the world it would be Canada. It seems to peaceful and a great place to live in. Everything is five minutes away (when I visited I could walk to the mall--where I live it takes 20 minutes to walk to school and its the closest thing to me!). I love the thought of writing buses and trains everyday reading while there... that's what I did when I visited this summer. Also, my mom lives there... so it'd be great to live near her!

Where would I live, that's really tough, probably somewhere like Singapore or Thailand. There are still beaches, and it's culturally different than anywhere else in the world. Plus it's BEAUTIFUL! :)

if i could live in another country it would be in italy it looks sooo beautiful there or maybe in japan, the crime there is sooo low you can just walk anywhere on foot and not worry to much about someone pointing a gun at you and stealing your money (not that that's happened to me thank god but i worry about that in america since the crime rate is super high which scares me so much) another reason people walk on foot is because not everyone owns a car which is pretty cool because you spend less money on gas and you get to stay very healthy and fit even when your an old lady :) so i guess i chose japan haha

CANADA!

They get better cable.

No seriously, they do... I felt unloved as an American watching their cable, really I did.

Or Japan,

I am seriously considering just getting over it and learning Japanese. I could watch all my animes and read all my manga as it comes out, not when corporate/I-WANT-MONEY America deems it fit to give it to me.

I would choose Greece because I love the people's accents. Also, the guys are hot, I would love to learn the history of it, and the towns are so beautiful!

I grew up in Hong Kong/China, so I'd probably pick HK again. It was a different culture for sure, but it was really Westerized too and just way too neat.

My second choice would probably be England.

Somewhere in Europe. I've always wanted to go to Europe. Maybe go to Italy and meet a really cute Italian guy--I mean, what girl wouldn't? but then I heard Italy's crime rate is really high...is that true? I have no clue. Maybe Great Britain, I just love listening to British accents. Or France, I love French food. But Italy has really good pasta, or so I heard. And I've also been told that people in Denmark are really nice. And I would love to go to Greece too! I've been wanting to go to Greece after seeing Mamma Mia on Broadway and in theaters...is backpacking through Europe an option?

haha

I would choose Scotland. So much history and such beautiful scenery.

It is a tight decision between England and Ireland, but I think I would choose Ireland. Not only because it is the beautiful Emerald Isle, but also because it is the origination of my family. I am almost completely Irish and very proud of my heritage. I have returned to the old religious ways of my ancestors (before Roman invasion of England thus leading to the Catholicism of both England and Ireland) and I think returning to the birthplace of my family would only give more honor to the family name.

So I think Ireland is where I would be. Actually...it i s where I plan to be.

I would chose Paris because its the most beautiful place there is, to me anyway

I think I would pick Switzerland bacause they do cool things to help stop Global Warming and are athletic. Also, my friend lives there, so that would be fun!

Greece. Because it seems like no matter where you live, you're near that beautiful water. The buildings are such a blinding white contrast to that water and the little towns sound fabulous!

Today I would say Spain, but I reserve the right to change my mind at any point in the future. I was in Spain a few years ago and I absolutely fell in love.

Wow! This is a really hard one! I would love to live anywhere in the world because I think it would be amazing just to see a place so unlike the US. However, the one country that keeps popping into mind is Italy. I would love to live in Italy because it sounds so beautiful! And all the culture surrounding it! That would be amazing. =]

I would choose either Australia or Italy - tough to pick! Australia for it's beautiful landscape and amazing accents, and Italy for the history and of course the gelato. :)

The first places to come to mind is Australia and Italy. I think it would be amazing to live there and it would be so much fun. But when I think about, I'd rather just visit for a while. I think I would prefer to live here in Canada. Dispite the weather sometimes I love it here and I wouldn't want to go anywhere else. :)

I would love to live in England. The accents are awesome and they speak English and England is a ton closer to places like France, Italy, Spain then the US is. I wouldn't want to live in those other places because, well, I don't speak another language and the UK is the closest to it, so I could take weekend trips or something. Well, I doubt I'd go to Germany, since I've lived there before and it sucked, but the other beautiful places, yes.

China, cause I'm Chinese and I never been there. It's kind of dirty, but I think I'd live. Plus, I have an obsession with the cheesy dramas. Or Japan, their technology is amazing.

I'd want to live in Scotland. My ancestor's have a family castle there that I absolutely LOVE. Plus, Oliver Wood? Yeah. Enough said.

This is hard... I can't really decide between Japan, Spain, or a far northern country like Iceland or Norway. Hmmm... Iceland is supposed to be the happiest country on Earth, but has a small population and is on an island. I probably would feel strange in Japan because I'm not Asian and just about everyone else is. Maybe Spain.

I would love to live in England if I could live somewhere else. London would be really nice because that's where both my parents went to university and after hearing so many great stories about their experiences, I would love to spend some time there and have a few adventures & stories of my own to share! :)

The Spanish culture is one of my favorite cultures (besides my own), so I think Latin countries would be top on my list. I love Puerto Rico (never been there, but have heard how beautiful it is). I've always loved Puerto Rico since I was in high school (had to do with a Puerto Rican guy I thought was sooo FINE). I have an aunt from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and have heard her stories and seen pics. I've been to Cuernavaca, Morales (Mexico) and fell in love with it!! It's so peaceful and beautiful there, so I'd live there.

I'd also choose St. Thomas Virgin Islands (I had a friend in 5th grade from there and absolutely loved her accent and have heard that it's beautiful also).

Maybe Canada cause it had bettr healthcare, it's cleaner, less crime, etc. etc. And I wouldn't be that far from family and friends.

I would like to live in Switzerland. I heard so many good things about it.
