COOP 2: Beach Volleyball

The sport of the day is one of my favorites: Beach Volleyball. Sun, sand, and playing your guts out. What's not to love? (Especially when there are shirtless guys involved, though the women rock, too.) The sad thing for me, though, is that volleyball of any kind was always my worst sport. I always wound up with bright red forearms, out-of-bounds serves, and balls spike directly into the net. Oh well, that doesn't mean I can't enjoy watching it, right?

And, if a great beachy summer read is what you're looking for you will love today's bonus prize:
CRUEL SUMMER
by Alyson Noel.

Having recently discarded her dorky image—and the best friend that went with it—Colby Cavendish is looking forward to a long hot season of parties, beach BBQ's, and hopefully, more hook-ups with Levi Bonham, the hottest guy in school. But her world comes crashing down when her parents send her away to spend the summer in Greece with her "crazy" aunt Tally. Stranded on a boring island with no malls, no cell phone reception, and an aunt who talks to her plants, Colby finds herself worrying that her new friends have forgotten all about her. But when she meets Yannis, a cute Greek local, everything changes. She experiences something deeper and more intense than a summer fling, and it forces her to see herself, and the life she left behind, in a whole new way...

One summer changes everything in this poignant young adult novel about best friends, popularity, and an unforgettable summer romance.

And if that wasn't enticing enough, here's the awesome trailer:

To enter this contest, just share your best and/or worst sport. As I've already admitted, my worst sport was volleyball (although I've never tried hockey and I was pretty awful at soccer, too--all that foot-eye coordination). My best sports were always tennis (my partner and I won our conference doubles tourney) and swimming (I took 2nd in breast stroke at our conference meet).

Oh, and before anyone asks about cross-country (since it's, you know, that main event in OH. MY. GODS.) I'll just confess now that running was never my thing.

If you want a chance to win OH. MY. GODS. and CRUEL SUMMER just enter the contest in comments below.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL CONTEST
Answer this question: What are your best and/or worst sports?

PRIZES
(1) copy of OH. MY. GODS. or teaser of GODDESS BOOT CAMP
(1) copy of CRUEL SUMMER by Alyson Noel

Enter below and check back tomorrow (and the day after that and the day after that) for a new contest. Winners of all contests will be posted on August 25th.

And don't forget the other contests:

Gold Medal Contest

My best sport would have to be soccer. I don't play that much of it right now but I used to. And I really miss playing forward. I also played goalie but I liked Forward better because I love the feeling when you score a goal! My worst sport would have to be basketball. My brother plays it for the school team and sometimes I play with him and lets just say that I never get to touch the ball.

I don't need either book (so if I win, I'd like to teaser), since I already have both. My best sport? In high school, it was competitive cheerleading. My worst sport? Pretty much anything involving a ball. Or running. The kiss of death was if it involved both.

Best sport used to be horseback riding. I loved jumping and could practice for hours.

Worst? Anything with hand to eye coordination. Like baseball. Or basketball. :)

My best sport was/is tennis. I've played since I was seven. Worst - golf.

I had the great pleasure of meeting you at the Literacy Signing and started reading your book on Sunday. Finished it Monday. I loved it! I can't wait to read the next one! And congrats again on it being optioned for television!

I haven't read any of Allison's books (yet), but did have the pleasure of meeting her too (I'm a friend of Caryn's) and look forward to catching up on all her books.

Um... my best sport was band. Is that a sport? I carried 50 pound drums in parades, so it really was a combo of long distance running in slow motion and weight lifting.

So obviously, my worst sport was all of them. I was marginally less horrible at volleyball and tennis, but only marginally. Don't get me started on the others. It's too humiliating.

Ugh I was sooooooo horrible at Volleyball, too. I hated it! Though it does look sooooooo fun on the beach. I pretty much suck at all sports though. My best sport would have to be swimming. I was pretty awesome for awhile as a kid, but never joined a team. I did gymnastics too and really really loved that, but wasn't all that great. I'm an individual sport kinda gal I guess.

My worst sport was softball. Ugh, painful, painful swings and misses but I was able to run so my best sport was track!

My best sport is softball. My worst? OMG - gymnastics. I sucked at it. I'm pretty tall and I was scared, but I love watching it. :) Great contest!

What are your best and/or worst sports?

Best... kickball...;)

worst... tether ball...

Me best sport would be soccer. I love to play soccer during gym class. I love to score goals and I always get picked. My worst sport would be volleyball. I hate it. I'm 5'0 ft so it's hard for me to get the ball over the net and I duck every time the ball comes towards me.

Margay said...

I don't have a good sport. I am not athletic at all.

bookworm said...

My best sport would have to be swimming, I was pretty good at that. Worst sport, definitely softball. I just couldn't seem to hit that darn ball! Too bad it was required in Phys Ed., that was a really bad unit for me!

viabloomington said...

Ooo! I would so love to win! :^)

My worst sport was basketball. Since I'm now a towering 5'2", let's just say I was a lot shorter in high school!

My best sport is croquet. No, really! I can send an opponent's croquet ball halfway to China!

Fingers crossed!

My worst sport was probably volleyball, too...although I apparently quit t-ball when I was like 5 because I didn't think it was fun :D

My best (and I use that term lightly) would be either hockey or field hockey...I'm not sure I was necessarily very good at either of them, but I really did love playing them

The Book Muncher said...

my best sport...doesnt exist. i'm really not a sport person. though i'm not half bad at badminton.

my worst sport? dont know either, i suck at all of them!! maybe...lacrosse? i think i tried (and failed) to play that once...

Kris said...

My BEST sport is probably being an avid couch potato watching every Mets game. Of course, when the Olympics come around, I end up watching most sports and learn all of the rules so I can know when there's an illegal move or who deserves deductions. My WORST sport? Too many to count. I'd probably be better now, but when I took gym classes, none of the girls really tried hard so I didn't attempt most sports. Now I wish I had...

Diana Dang said...

Ack, I'm not that active. But let's see. I used to take swimming classes but I stopped for almost five years now. I am okay at it, but I barely remember some of it.

I run everyday (or I try) to lose weight so I guess I'm good at that as long as you give me a flat road.

I'm bad at everything they give me in gym class because I don't like to try.

My best sport is tennis. I play for my school team. My worst sport is football. I can't understand what's going on even when I'm watching it...

My best sport is definitely track and field. I'm super fast at running, however, I never actually try to get into the team and I never actually practice. I should maybe get to that... In the fifth grade we had a mile-run and I did it in 8 minutes and some seconds. I was the first girl done (we did it by gender).

My worst sport is probably volleyball. I'm just no good at it and that's all there is to it. :(

I was a competitive cheerleader for 12 years, so I guess that would be my best sport. :) The worst, haha, BASEBALL! Oh man, I have never been able to hit a ball to save my life! Not even off of a tee. It's pretty pathetic.

robin_titan said...

i'm not very good at sports but i suppose the best one i'm good at is volleyball and the worst is basketball, i do cannot to throw a ball in that basket at all!!! i'm so horrible at it and i forget the rules and mess up the game many times (i've usually played with friends nothing professional of course)

Love baseball... can't play it though even if I was paid.

I beat the crud outta the catcher behind me with the bat... hit myself with it too...

AND THANK GOD, you haven't seen me try and catch the ball... it is rather pathetic.

I'm good at football though, 5 3 but I can still run em over!

I'm no good at any sport... but I love volleyball, even thoguh I'm rubbish at playing it.

Lauren said...

I play Field Hockey but I don't really consider myself excellent at it. I basically play because I love the sport.

My worst sport would probably be the rest because I suck at most of them! Though If I think about it, I guess, my worst is basketball since I can't dribble or shot for my life.

Rebekah (the_littleminx) said...

Basketball was always a sport I could do pretty well in. I loved playing volleyball (never played beach) growing up, but I don't think I was every all that spectacular at it. LOL I'm also a big ping pong fan. Does that count? hehehe

Anonymous said...

I'm usually horrible at any sport involving balls-soccer, baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball- you name it. I have a really slow reaction time and, ummmm..., over the years, I have found that balls have a tendency of flying a really high speeds towards my head. And its not just balls--a kiwi hit my head one time in 8th grade. And yeah.
so considering how I don't have a very good relationship with balls, I was really suprised when I took a tennis lesson and really liked it and I'm still playing to this day

My best sport is most probably badminton. Yeah the only time anyone would want me in their team lol

But I reaally enjoy playing volleyball and tennis.

My worst would definitely be soccer. I mean I like playing it for awhile and then ahhh I'll play something else. Kinda like when your playing 1 game of Monoply for 2 hours straight, it's never ending ...or it seems. lol (Don't get me wrong I love Monopoly and the little guy in the top hat heheh)

My best sport would have to be Volleyball! Seriously though...I played for 5 years and loved every minute of it. If I could go back to it, i completely would in a heartbeat.

My worst sport would have to be baseball/softball. My coordination is good...but not that good! Lol.

worst sport was ice skating. I love to watch it now, but my dreams of becoming an ice skater died the first day of the lesson. The minute I stepped out on the ice, I fell and hit the back of my head. That was it for me. I was done.

HOWEVER, it's now one my fav spectator sports to watch. Especially pairs

Liz said...

Volleyball was my worst sport too. I'm not sure I even had a best sport, as I was not at all athletic, but I loved double dutch :)

First of all, I love playing sports. I love watching it. I love getting dirty. I love playing competitivly. Which is why I am so competitive. Notice that I didn't say I was good at playing sports. =] I don't have a sport I'm exceptionally bad at, but I am absolutely horrible at catching or hand-eye corrdination stuff. I can throw, tackle, slide, etc. But ask me to catch or hit something with a racket and you might as well give a point to the other team. =]

swimgrl100 said...

Oops. I didn't mention my best sport. =] My best sport would be swimming.

My best sport is definitely tennis... when playing on my Wii! In reality, I love playing tennis and going bike riding, so even though I'm not amazing I'll say those are my best. My worst is definitely volleyball too, I don't really like the idea of the ball coming right at me and my reflexes are definitely not good enough to know how to react in time!

Kristy said...

My best sport is volleyball! I love it and I always played it with my school teams. I'm not the best at it but I am pretty good.
My WORST sport I would have to say is golf. I can't golf if my life depended on it. I have boobs okay! It just doesn't work...

Lenore said...

Best: Bowling. My high score is 198. I am also extremely good at hitting free throws in basketball.

Worst: Which to choose? Probably soccer. I nearly failed that unit in PE.

Kelsey said...

I'm terrible at all sports really, but running more then anything, I hate running long distance. My best sport is probably swimming.

Linda said...

Ugh... This is a hard one. I'm awful at all sports. My least bad sport would have to be... badminton. And I'm pretty bad at that, I hit my friend (who was standing pretty far away) in the head four times in a row. My absolute worse sport is, lacrosse. I can never get the ball in the stupid net. T_T

Shalonda Dixon said...

My best sport has always been cheerleading. I don't have enough coordination to walk in a straight line; however, when it comes to cheering something magical happens!

My worst sport is basketball. As I stated before, I lack coordination, so it is impossible for me to dribble and run at the same time. And you can forget about shooting a ball through the hoop! :)

A Literate Musician said...

My best sport would have to be Tae Kwon Do. I've done since I was six. It's a family sport. My worst sport is definately basketball or any sport in -ball. I just find them REALLY REALLY boring.

Paradox said...

I pretty much stink at all sports but soccer. I actually was pretty good with that, and scored a lot of goals. My worst? That would have to be basketball. I'm just about as bad as you can get in that sport. Once when I was playing basketball the ball fell down from about 20 feet in the air onto my finger, which is still slightly out of place years later.

Dominique said...

My best sport would probably have to be archery. I've been shooting at tournaments for a while now and have improved quite a bit since I started. I've placed in the top 3 at most of my tournaments and I really love the sport. It's fun, calming, and really satisfying. And the archery community is great! People are really friendly & always there to talk to you, lend you a hand, or give you a piece of friendly advice! :)

My worst sport? Probably baseball; my hand-eye coordination (or at least my skills w/ a skinny stick of wood and a ball traveling at insane speeds towards my face) leaves a lot to be desired

Rae said...

Surprisingly, I'm more athletic now, at 32, than I was in my younger days! I'd say, now, my best sport is volleyball. I LOVE volleyball and am pretty good at it. My worst would probably be basketball...actually any sport with running. Running's not my thing either.
