COOP 16: Rhythmic Gymnastics

One thing I don't understand. The gymnastics I wrote about the other day is technically called "artistic" gymnastics. This makes no sense to me, because I think rhythmic gymnastics is yards more artistic.

I mean, Shawn Johnson is a gravity defying, flipping-spinning-and-flying, speed-seeking missile. But artistic? Not compared to the beautiful hoop, ball, ribbon, and club routines that the ballet-like rhythmic gymnasts perform. (But who am I to question the IOC, huh?)

Anyway, I want to present our two fabulous bonus prizes of the day, both of which have to do with the most artistic-- er, rhythmic(?) of girly talents: gossip.

Prize #1: READ MY LIPS by Teri Brown.

Serena just wants to fly under the radar at her new school. But Serena is deaf, and she can read lips really well-even across the busy cafeteria. So when the popular girls discover her talent, there's no turning back.

From skater chick to cookie-cutter prep, Serena's identity has done a 180...almost. She still wants to date Miller, the school rebel, and she's not ready to trade her hoodies for pink tees just yet. But she is rising through the ranks in the school's most exclusive clique.

With each new secret she uncovers, Serena feels pressure to find out more. Reading lips has always been her greatest talent, but now Serena just feels like a gigantic snoop...

Prize #2: An advance copy of PRINCESS OF GOSSIP by Julia DeVillers and Sabrina Bryan--yes, the Cheetah Girl! This one is so advance there isn't even a blurb yet. I stole this from the Seventeen website:

Already itching for school to start? We didn't think so. But here's one reason to look forward to fall — Cheetah Girl Sabrina Bryan's new book, Princess of Gossip, comes out October 7! Seventeen caught up with Sabrina at Toys "R" Us last week as she launched her new make-your-own jewelry line, Color Me Gemz. Decked out in trouser shorts, a flowery top, and white heels, Sabrina gave us the inside scoop on what we can expect from her new book.

Princess of Gossip, she says, is about a teen girl who starts a celebrity gossip blog. But as the blog becomes more popular, it also starts to become mean and hurtful, and she gradually realizes just how powerful a force gossip can be.

Do you love me yet? (No, that's not the entry question.)

On today's topic of gossip, I have a serious question. Have you ever been the subject of a false rumor? Or (shame on you) have you ever started a rumor (false or otherwise) about another girl? I think I was pretty lucky in my school years. I kept a pretty low profile. No one noticed me enough to take the time to start a rumor, and I definitely wasn't the sort of girl to start one. The closest I ever got to anything resembling that kind of girl fight was in seventh grade when an eighth grade girl threatened to beat me up for crushing on her boyfriend. (Just crushing, mind you. Not any actual going after or anything.)

RHYTHMIC GYMNASTICS CONTEST
Answer this question: Have you ever been caught up (on either side) in a rumor?

PRIZES
(1) copy of OH. MY. GODS. or teaser of GODDESS BOOT CAMP
(1) copy of READ MY LIPS by Teri Brown
(1) copy of PRINCESS OF GOSSIP by Julia DeVillers and Sabrina Bryan

Enter below and check back tomorrow for the last new contest. Winners of all contests will be posted on August 25th.

Nope.

How boring is my life!

I've had a few rumors spread about me. One of the worst was probably that I made up my boyfriend which is the stupidest thing I ever heard. He was older so he didn't go to highschool, and my friends never met him. So one of my "ex" friends made up a rumor saying he was fake. It got all around the school and I had to bring him around to prove he was real because I was sick and tired of people laughing at me. The girl that spread it was pretty much jealous that I had a boyfriend and she didn't.

I think no to both. Frankly, I think people in middle school/high school thought I was too boring to talk about.

Ooh, I already have Read My Lips but I'll still join because if I win, I make a giveaway to promote my blog!

Rumors... I don't believe I have been. There were bad relationships, yes, but nothing to vile. My life is not so dramatic...

ah yes. the classic, "dont u dare crush on my boyfriend." or, in my case, the, "don't u dare crush on the guy i wish would glance my way."

I was in 5th grade, sitting at my lunch table, innocently pulling off the crust of my pb&j as I did every day. Then Lizzie, a girl I did't really know all that well, came up and said, "Don't even THINK about John. He's MINE."

The thing was, John barely even knew who Lizzie was, and I seriously doubt he knew that he was HERS. Even more amusing was the fact that I hadn't crushed on John in 3 years. That's right. It was a 2nd grade crush. I was kinda weirded out by the whole affair.

This past year I became friends with a girl who told me Lizzie had done the same thing to her. Apparently good ol' Lizzie tracked down every girl who had ever crushed on John.

CREEPY.

Anyway, I've always wondered who spread the rumour that I still liked John. I had kept the 2d grade crush a secret, so I don't know why she came up to me.

There's been stupid rumors about me but nothing to harsh. One was started by this girl who was jealous that I got straight A's while she did poorly. So, she thought if she told even one I cheated people would think I wasn't as smart as they thought. Though this ended up backfiring and now noone talks to her that much. Other than that I'm quite a boring person to gossip about.

Also, I’ve never started rumors about other people because I don’t like seeing them get hurt.

Yes! And it sucked. Yuck. Bad memories.

i'm generally not much of a rumor person. maybe when i was in sixth grade i might've started a rumor, but i dont think it was something really bad, but then again, i really dont remember

Nope, I'm rumor-free (sounds like a food or cleaning product doesn't it?) I don't exactly fly under the radar, but I have the rare gift of being able to shrug stuff off. I can see through other people's crap and it just doesn't bother me. I definitely don't blend, but I'm not particularly memorable either, unless I've been in your class. Then I'm the one everyone turns to to know the right answer. I also don't follow the code of high school with cliques and drama and such. I'm just too strange to have rumors about me.
Plus I can pick my friends really really well. The ones I have now I've had since I started high school and I'm a senior now. One of them I've had since middle school. So to sum up, good friends + unquiness and answer accuracy = no rumors

Nope. I try not to add too much drama into my life... :] ...But my friend had a really bad rumor spread about her a couple of years ago and it was just horrible b/c she was going through a tough time with other stuff and then to have this rumor spread...it just sucked. But then it backfired on the girl who spread it cause no one believed her :]

I've never been the kind of person who spreads rumors, but many people have spread rumors about me... mostly about how weird I was or some bizarre thing someone concluded when they saw me talking to a someone.

Liz said...

I can't think of any rumors I've been involved in. That either means I never have, or that I've blocked out the entirety of junior high :)

Anonymous said...

I don't think I have. Not that I remember, but I have seen what they can do and am kind of scared of what would happen if there was one about me!

Unknown said...

I'm like you, Tera. I pretty much kept to myself throughout junior high and high school. There were a few who thought I was stuck up, but, once they got to know me and found out that I just wasn't a talkative girl, their opinion changed. If someone started a rumor about me, I never found out...didn't care either way.

I also wasn't the type to start rumors about anyone. If I were to start a rumor, it would've gotten overshadowed by the fact that I actually talked...

Kelsey said...

I don't think so. I'm more on the quite side so I don't think they would have any rumors to spread about me or my life.

Anonymous said...

To be honest, I'm pretty sure everyone has had at least one rumor about them. Even if they never heard it. So I'm pretty sure I've had at least one rumor spread around about me. Although I never heard it.

I don't think I have ever unintentionally started a rumor. I always make sure people know that I could be wrong and that I have no idea if what they said is what they meant, so they should go confirm this with the actual person. So I hope I haven't started any rumors. =/

i've never started rumors about other people, i was just raised that way and boy am i glad i was because rumors can really hurt a person's feelings, quite a few years ago there was this guy at my school that said something HORRIBLE about me to some friends of his but thank god that didn't spread around all over the very small school it was so mean of him but that's just the way he is he talks about everyone seriously he does, even the teachers, i don't know why he does it but i kind of forgave him, at first i was really hurt then i thought oh who cares : )

Ok, so I will be the brave one and admit that I have been involved in both sides of rumors. I have never made up or started a rumor about anyone else; however, I know that in middle and high school I helped keep them going. What can I say? I have a big mouth and although I am grown, I still have a weak spot for gossip--but only celebrity gossip!

And of course, I've had rumors spread about me. Luckily, none of them were damaging and they faded pretty quickly. Probably because I did not involve myself with cliques and stayed neutral and friendly to pretty much everyone.

I'm generally a pretty shy person so I tend to steer clear of the rumor mill! Actually there wasn't much of a rumor mill at my school because we were all pretty close, and most of my friends weren't that mean spirited! =D

UGH. RUMORS. I hate them. with a passion. I have been the object o many, many horrible rumors. I have heard many, but never spread any. Rumors are just belittling to people in general, I see no need.

I've never really been much of a gossip. Karma can rock sometimes. I've never really been part of any gossip.

I think the worst rumor someone ever started about me was that I was drunk one day in the 8th grade at school. It was totally not true and got me irritated.
I've never started a rumor that I can recall on, if I did start one it was probably miniscule.

Rumors are bad, I know, but they are inevitable.

I was actually at the end of a rumor. A "friend" told another girl that I thought the Hungarian exchange student dressed slutty. I never said that (I did say I thought her clothes were always awfully tight but never referenced to it as slutty). Anyway, the girl my friend told the rumor to decided she wanted to beat me up because she was friends with the Hungarian girl. Ironically enough, the girl who wanted to beat me up was in a car accident and ended up in a wheelchair for quite a while. I don't know if it was karma or what, but after that she wasn't able to threaten me anymore.

Is it really bad that I honestly don't know (or can't remember?)

Well there was almost one thing...but it wasn't so...nope ;)

Unknown said...

Hmm... Not so much a rumor, but this girl said that my whole table (Yes, the infamous Asian/Nerd Table) is in love with this guy. Why? Because well, when you're the same race it's instant love. According to her, the girl who asked out a random guy at the playground out of desperation.

Yes, I've been caught several times on the wrong side of a rumor. I don't recall ever having been the subject of a rumor, though. My bad.

In high school I tried to stay low profile, but I ended getting caught up in a few rumors. Guy troubles and jealous girl dramas. :) It's nice to be older and mostly drama free.
