COOP 6: Diving

I'm not afraid of diving so much as I'm afraid of plummeting from a three-story building into the water at 35mph. Oh wait, that is diving. So, yeah, I'm afraid of diving.

I'm also afraid of taking a misstep and slipping off the end of the diving board or--better yet--not jumping out far enough and smacking my head against the concrete platform. So, the closest thing to diving I've done is jumping feet-first off the 3m springboard at swim practice when I was like 10 and again off the 3m platform when I was like 16. My stomach flew up into my throat both times. I'm pretty sure I'll never do it again.

Still, it's fascinating to watch. How they manage to twist and spin and somersault and still dive head-first into the water is amazing.

Speaking of diving head-first ... today's bonus prize features a reluctant girl detective who dives head-first into a fashionable mystery when her favorite tacky knock-off is stolen. LULU DARK CAN SEE THROUGH WALLS by Bennett Madison.

Lulu Dark is the anti-Nancy—a chic, tough-talking city girl who never meant to get involved in a mystery.

But when her favorite purse is stolen during a Many Handsomes concert, Lulu knows she has to get it back. After all, it was one of a kind—and the lead singer’s phone number was stashed inside! Lulu dives deep into the fray along with her friends Daisy and Charlie, and discovers a twisted mystery involving a rock star, a rich socialite, a loony landlord, and a serious case of mistaken identity.

Contest entry question of the day is: Have you ever done something scary? How did you wind up doing it? Did you have to talk yourself into it? When I was seventeen, I went from the heart of the Midwest to start college in New York. As in New York City. It was a huge change and a huge leap of faith. There was a point, before I made the final decision, where I thought, "Omigod, if I go to New York I'm going to be mugged and murdered." For about two minutes I was terrified. And then logic set in. I countered my fear with this realization: If everyone in New York were mugged and murdered ... there'd be no one left to live there. Since that obviously is not the case (population 8.2 million and counting) then maybe that didn't have to be my determining factor. I went to New York and have never once regretted the decision. (And never once got mugged or murdered, knock on wood.)

I did a tour of an active volcano once. That was a bit scary.

What really freaked me out though...
When I was a child I spied a caterpillar in this spider's web- and everyone knows how kids are with caterpillar. So I went to "save" it from the evil spider (I really didn't notice the caterpillar was dead). That took a lot of courage.

I went to Tennessee with my family in December. We went to a place (which I don't remember its name) and you can ice skate, eat, go on the slopes and ski, and other stuff like that. I went on this "ride" thing like they have to get to the slopes... where you get on pull the lapbar and sit and it takes you up by a rope.

Well, first of all, the height was pretty intense and looking down all I could see was rocks (ones that if you fall off you hit your head you die) so I got kinda scared of that. I was with my stepmom and she too was scared. We safely got up to the highest slope even though the ride had budged a couple of times. In the end, it wasn't all this that scared me because guess what shoes I was wearing? Converse sneakers. I swear after five minutes I could not feel my feet. They were becoming frozen. I had to push my family to go back down (the scary ride) to get to the building where there was a heater.
Going down that mountain, I could not feel my feet WHAT SO EVER. It has been the most incredibly scary feeling in the world. Will my feet fall off? Will I be able to walk? Will they have to amputate them? I was scared out of my mind. When we got down the mountain I could barely walk... I was limping and running-limping to get inside.

The lesson of this story is never wear Converse sneakers when its cold and snowy. I know I learned my lesson.

When I was in elementary school my friends and I would play Bloody Mary (or Bloody Mary I dropped your baby). You stand in a pitch black bathroom and stare at the mirror (if you can find it) and chant Bloody Mary or Bloody Mary I dropped your baby. My friends could never do it by themselves they needed a group in there and even then they'd run out screaming. So they dared someone to go in alone no one would do it so I went in. I was so scared, nothing happened, I knew that but it was still creepy. After I came out they were so impressed, every time someone new came to play or walked by they stuck me in there for a couple of minutes to show me off. So I had a pretty creepy couple of days trying to be brave.

The sky walk at the Grand Canyon sounds scary but totally amazing! Off the top of my head I can't think of anything really crazy that I've done. I'd love to go sky diving one day. :)

i have done something scary before of course, it was when i was about seven years old and i got on the dungeon drop in six flags astroworld here in houston, texas (god! i miss astroworld!!!) i was sooo scared but i wanted to prove to my dad i wasn't a kid that was scared of the rides, i got on other scary rides but this was the worst!! it was sooo high i closed my eyes for some of it but made the mistake of opening them when we were all the way up (forgot how high it is, super high though) and looked down, it was a bad idea, i got sooo scared i thought my racing heart was going to pop right out of my chest of just stop suddenly it didn't, it just kept beating faster and faster--i still remember how scared i was (i can't believe i remember that it was a long time ago, well not that long ago but still) a few seconds later we were dropped and went doooown so fast it scared me even more!!! --that was definitely the scariest thing i've ever done

ALL THE TIME!

But is my scary your scary?

Well, Wafa flipped out this one time when I just busted out yelling at this scary black dude that was WAY and I mean WAY bigger than me. Wafa thought he was gonna kill us, and I was going to kill him for waving his cigarette in my face. [I get migraines, bad ones from the smell].

I haven't done anything heights because no one lets me go near em.

But overall, I'm not scared of much, which is why as I'm thinking about it now I just can't think of anything really scary that I've done.

i dont think i've really done many scary things...although i do like to trick my friends on Halloween. for example, a couple of years ago, a big group of my friends and i went trick-or-treating. there was a guy we didnt know with some scary mask and he kept of following one of my friends around. she didnt notice until she finally turned around and then she started screaming like it was the scariest thing ever. i thought it was pretty funny :D

I'm with you on the diving. Eeek! So not my cup of tea. Diving boards look so fun to me, but my undeniable clumsy nature has always led me to believe that I should stay far away from such slippery, bouncy, lethal surfaces. Oh, and that fact that I'm scared of heights doesn't help. Pft.

Now, on to your question... Have I ever done something really scary? Hmmmm. I'm sure I have, but I think I'm just kind of boring when it comes to anything majorly scary. I mean, I've smuggled Bibles in to China (ILLEGAL) many times when I was a kid. That was scary, but not in the "oooh, gasp, I can't believe he did that, yikes!" kind of way. I've gone on a roller coaster a time or two, again scary as heck when you're me. Yet, probably not that intimidating to someone else.

Rope swinging with a group of my friends at this place called Hidden Valley, which is a little valley in my city that is...hidden. yea. haha
ok so anyways they finally convinced me to swing and so I grabbed the rope tightly with my hands and took a running start and the next minute, I was in the air...then I accidently let go too early and fell, like, 10 feet from the air. But I was ok! The tree branches slowed my fall and I just got a couple of scrapes from it :D

Yes. Me and a friend went out of town. I did not know her tags were out on her car. A state patrolmen passed us going pretty fast and then we noticed that he had turned around. So she decides to take a country road and hides up in one of the driveways. Lo and behold about an hour later we went home. I never went anywhere with her again.

Riding those really crazy roller coasters at Genting Highlands! Scary but totally fun! xD

Hrm...scary? I think the scariest thing I have done in my life, and no I am not trying to be dramatic, I am being completely truthful...was battling cancer. To this day I live in fear that it will return along with another diagnosis of breast cancer.

Several years ago, I was diagnosed with two aneurysms near the base of my brain stem. As we all know, the brain is a tricky organ and doing any kind of surgery in that area is, well, tricky.

My scary decision was saying no to the surgery. At that time, my recovery rate would've been very low. I didn't want to be a vegetable for the rest of my life. I didn't want that kind of burden for my family. I didn't want to take the chance that'd I never be able to write books again, go dancing, travel, enjoy life. I was basically dying and it was very hard for my family to accept that option. I had to live with the fact that I could go at any moment and I was okay with that.

So I waited. Until a better solution came along, I dealt with the debillitating migraines, even eventually learned to control them. Something better did come along, eventually, and I'm currently "all clear."

When I was little seeing and movie, including Finding Nemo was scary then (involving barfing because of sacredness), but I haven't really done anything tat I now consider scary.

I have a couple irrational fears and every time I face one of them I have to talk myself into it. Walking into a room where I know no one is terrifying to me, but I still do it. Ditto driving across a bridge. Luckily I live in a place where there aren't too many bridges. But I have driven across them and lived to tell the tale.
Have I done things other people would consider scary? I'm a big roller coaster fan and will go on just about anything.

Well...I'm a huge scardycat. So bascially anything involving heights takes the cake for me. Which is why I would fail so miserably at diving. The most horrifying experiences I have had(which really aren't that horrifying)were going on an airplane (those things could nosedive any second!!!) and going vertical on a roller coaster. I love roller coasters but on the climb up, I'm hypervenilating.

I honestly get scared of killing insects in my house - it freaks me out! But when my husband isn't home, it is something that has to be done so I suck it up and squish the little suckers! Even better, I'll grab the vaccuum!

Oh yes. I crossed a freezing river with slippery rocks to position myself at the top of a raging waterfall in the South American jungle and then I jumped. It was during the rainy season, so the volume of water nearly crushed the life out of me. But luckily, I'm still here to tell the tale, and recommend against doing something so crazy.

The scariest thing I did was walk over a bridge. I know that doesn't seem that scary but it's one of my biggest fears. It was one of those rope bridges that don't seem very stable. And while I was on it people were shaking it. I try to keep myself away from doing scary things.

Unknown said...

The scariest thing I ever did was... a ropes course. It was only 30 ft., but I'm proud of myself for going through with it because I'm deathly afraid of heights.

I've been bungee jumping. It wasn't that scary though. I spar a lot. That can get kind of scary. Especially when it's against these six foot seven monsters at my studio.

The scariest thing I've ever done was to leave home and live in a Hall of Residence this year. (Lol, it's like a tamer version of yours!) I know what you're thinking- you call that hard?! But I am really, really painfully shy! The moment I arrived the first formal dinner was starting, so everyone was dressed to the nines and I was I was fresh off the plane- sweaty and with frizzy hair, lol! =) Everyone was standing around in groups, talking and I knew nobody. I finally worked up the courage to talk to someone and they were really nice! =D In the end though the whole decision paid off- I've made some awesome friends here!

Yes! I've seen one tornado and been near at least one other and I'm still alive. Every time I was petrified with fear.

Okay this might be a long graphic story.

When my family was stationed in Germany because my dad was in the military we lived in these apartment buildings that were back to back to each other, Ours was the last on in the row. So when I was little I was at my friends house who lived a few apartment building away. So my mom and brother were in our apartment and my dad was at work. Around sundown there was a commotion going on across the apartment building were my family lived. My mom was the last one in the parking lot between the two apartments. There was this guy across the way who had taken his two young children hostage with a knife to there throats. The police came in and all the residents had to close the curtains and there was like SWAT team or something on the roofs and balcony's. My brother and mom were in the apartment alone across the street from where this was happening and it was so scary not being with them and being away from them. In the end the guy had let his two children go to wife and he slit his throat. The scariest thing I did was go into the apartment area across the street the morning after. I had to spend the school night at my bff's house so we were at the house early. The scarier thing is the neighbor hood kids had actually played with the guy and his kids one day, I remember. That day was a blur. But it was so scary going to the apartment in the morning.

So yeah, that's my scariest moment, the scariest thing I've ever done.

Scary for me, yes. When I was a senior in high school, I was invited to participate in the Miss Black Houston Teen pageant. That in itself was scary (I was exptremely shy), but the scarier part was participating in the swimsuit competition. I had to parade around stage in a lime green swimsuit. The horror! But I got through it.
