COOP 9: Taekwondo

Taekwondo is one of those sports that makes you want to get up and kick some butt. You just want to jump to your feet, get into a fighting stance, and punch, kick, and block your way across the room. Take it from me, it's not that easy.

In high school I had a friend who was a black belt in TKD. She was actually an instructor at her school. Well, near the end of senior year the owner of her school was teaching a self-defense class for women (highly recommended for all teen girls, btw) and I took the class. I totally fell in love the TKD (and, okay, one of the male instructors) and started training.

Since this was the summer after I graduated, I only got to study for three months. But I advanced to a yellow belt and have been kinda longing to get back at it ever since. (I tried to find a school in New York, but the owner of the one I visited was very mean and tried to intimidate me. I wasn't cowed, but neither did I want to study under him. I went to a karate class with a friend and it was, well, terrifying. I think I'll stick with Taekwondo when I start again.)

You can bet the characters in today's bonus prize totally kick butt. Today you get a chance to win THE SPECIALISTS: MODEL SPY by Shannon Greenland.

Sixteen-year-old Kelly James is in a lot of hot water. When David, her incredibly nice, not to mention super cute and irresistible, college RA, asked her to uncover some top-secret information, she thought why not? All she has to do is hack into the government's main computer system. Simple enough for a computer techie genius like herself. But a few hours later, she is caught. Only this isn't a run-of-the-mill arrest. Rather than serve a jail sentence in a juvenile detention, she accepts the option to change her identity and enlist in a secret government spy agency that trains teen agents to go undercover. After all, she has no family or friends at school. What does she have to lose? Instantly, Kelly Spree, a.k.a. girl genius GiGi, is born. And as if that wasn't overwhelming enough, she discovers that David works for this agency as well. Before she even begins to understand what is going on, she's sent on her first mission as an undercover model. Her partner? None other than David himself!

Question of the day has to do with kicking butt and taking names. Have you ever been in a fight? (And I don't mean an I'm-not-talking-to-you-because-you-stole-my-lip-gloss fight. I mean an honest to goodness fist fight.) I never have. I'm a pretty level-headed person, so I don't usually let my emotions rule the day. (Which is what I think happens during a fight.) If I'm mad at someone I'd rather just avoid them, ignore them, and write them off than make some big issue out of it. Non-confrontational could be my middle name.

Not very proud to say it, but yes. In middle school this girl and I got into a fight. It was more my fist and her pulling my hair and scratching my arms though. lol

I'm happy to say that I have not been in a fist fight. I'd probably lose, so it's a good thing I haven't.

I've never been in a fist fight. I rather imagine in my head me fist fighting the person (and I can't get in trouble that way!).

I have never been in a fist fight. If I did get into one, it would end with a lot of laughing =)

Not in an honest to goodness physical fight, no. My hubby is a black belt in Hung Gar Kung Fu (he has his own school), and he's had to use his mad skills a couple of times. I, however, have not.

I've never been in a fistfight, thank goodness, b/c I hate getting hurt, which kinda sucks because I'm a huge klutz...you know, the people who trip over their own feet? yaaa thats me haha

But I've been in plenty of verbal fights and arguments, and, in my opinion, those hurt more than physical fights b/c words can hurt way more than broken bones from sticks and stones...

Thanks for the contest! Enter me please!!!

Yeah, kind of. During a soccer game in 7th grade. Kind of an all out brawl. I was mostly pulling people apart. It was ugly. :)

HAHAHA!

I've literally gotten into fights with my brother, fights fights... not the he hit me so I slapped him, more like punching kicking pretty much just plain beating each other.

Yeah... not so hot...

;}

No, I haven't and I'll like it to keep that way. I mean yes I will occasionally punch my brother on his arm but not in an aggressive way or anything. I'm more of that type of person that argues about issues and stuff. I always do like a good debate! :D (even just watching them, like the presidential debates on CNN)

The only person who has ever made me angry enough to be physical is my younger sister--although it's been a few years since we've had a fight. Even then, it was just a few slaps and punches on the arm... Isn't it amazing how your siblings know exactly how to make your lose your temper?

Nope, never have.. Only speech fights xD lol!

Oh no, I have never been in any fist fight..ha ha. But I was a school debator, so tongue fights yes. Does that count? He he.

No, I haven't I do not think a fist fight is a good way to handle any situation unless you are trying to defend yourself from being attacked. Besides...I would kick the other persons ass! So who would want to fight me?!

Lol.

I'm a non-violent person so no I never have been and never hope to be. Though I secretly do wish I can punch out a couple of people...

I don't know if what I've done can really be considered a fist fight. I don't really get angry or fight, but in preschool this one kid tried to cut my hair, which was at least halfway down my back and very thick, with safety scissors. I decked him, but the teacher stepped in before he hit back. That's the closest I've ever come to a fist fight.

Anonymous said...

Never. Not even close. I'm a very non-confrontational person. Although I'd like to think that I'd be able to defend myself a little after watching all those martial arts movies. LOL

I haven't ever been in a fist fight...but I did totally get punched in the stomach in kindergarten--and it really hurt! But I have been thinking about taking some sort of self defense class or soemthing in case it ever comes up ;)

I have never been in a fist fight, and I'm very happy about that. I probably came close one or twice when I was younger and I had slightly physical arguments with my siblings, but an actual fist fight? No.

Anonymous said...

No I haven't. Although there have been times when I've almost started one. I have a horrible temper.

No... luckily... no...

I've never been in a fist fight and I'm kinda proud of that. Although once I almost did. The only way I'd get into a fist fight though is if I was hit first. I will never be the first one to hit, but if you hit me, you're getting it right back.

Kelsey said...

Nope. I'd be scared to get in one also, I know I would loose. My brother and I get at it sometimes, but I don't do fist-fights, him? I wouldn't put it past him. lol.

Unknown said...

No. I almost have, but I always think of the trouble I'd get in, and whether I'd make a fool of myself. Though, I do believe the would be people involved would have deserved it. I have kicked people and stabbed them with pencils/scissors though. Not hard. More jokingly.

Lol, I have never ever been in a fistfight! Like you said I don't let my emotions rule me.
It's fun to imagine it though- coz you can be a little more creative, haha! ;)
I fought with my sisters, but it's more of a mental thing- which can hurt more I think. =(

No. I've slapped a few people in the face, but I've never gotten into a full blown physical fight. Only with words and the occasional slap.

Dominique said...

Can't say I've been in a real fist fight. Actually, the closest thing to a "fight" I've ever been in is when I fence. But it's a pretty controlled sporting event, so no one'll be throwing any punches, not unless they want to be thrown out! So even then, I can't really call it a fight!
I don't think violence really solves much, so throwing punches and trying to clobber someone really isn't my style ;) Talking things through is better (since plenty of fights & arguments stem from misunderstandings) & no one walks away with a black eye, so that's a plus :)

This is awesome contest idea! No, I haven't got in a fist fight, and I hope I never will!

I've only had one fist fight in my entire life. I was in the 3rd grade. I'm not really a fighter, but this boy kept bullying me. Everyday he'd pick on me while we waited for the bus. I was shy, so, I didn't say anything. One morning, though, he went too far. He yanked my hair (so hard, that he had some strands in his hand). It hurt like crazy, so I turned around and punched him in the face. I know I surprised him (didn't expect me to fight back), but he hit me back. So, I took my backpack off and just kept hitting him over and over again. The best part? When we were sent to the principal's office, some of the other kids & the bus driver vouched for me and I was sent back to class with no fuss, no punishment, nothing. That'll teach people to mess with me. :)
